German Shepherd RESCUE of Central Texas
If you love German Shepherds, there is nothing more satisfying than being part of something as wonderful as fostering. You love, feed, care for, and work to earn their trust. You help mend the scars left by those they trusted at one time and help them to trust again. You look into their eyes and can now see that they know--finally, that someone cares! This is the reason for what we do.
This Fostering Agreement is hereby made by and between _________________________ (hereinafter, “Fostering Party”) and German Shepherd Rescue of Central Texas (hereinafter, "GSDRESCUECTX") on this ________ day of ________________, _______.
Thank you for offering to foster _____________________________ for GSDRESCUETCX.
Important information about fostering for GSDRESCUECTX is listed below, please initial each paragraph that you have read and agree with the following statements:
Your basic job is to keep the dog safe, loved and get them ready to be adopted. You will first need to assess the veterinary care they have received prior to coming into our group. All dogs need to be up to date on their shots, micro-chipped and spayed or neutered as soon as you get them if not done prior to their arrival in your home. Please look through their paperwork and make a copy of all papers. Then send the originals to the GSDRESCUECTX address at the bottom of this form at the time of adoption. It is your responsibility to know the history and keep up with the medical needs of the dog while in your care. GSDRESCUECTX will cover the approved medical costs during their stay with you. Fostering Party also needs to update the dog’s biography and pictures on the website when asked to do so and take the dog to adoptions events attended by GSDRESCUECTX if close enough to do so. _______________
Each of our dogs should live with a foster family where they are treated as part of the family. They are to be given love, attention, boundaries, and, in most cases, a home and life better than they've ever known. Most of these dogs have been abandoned and neglected, and we do everything within our power to make sure the home they go to is truly a "forever home" where they will be not only be loved, but well cared for physically and emotionally. In no event shall Fostering Party use any training techniques which focus on drawing out aggressive or offensive tendencies in the foster dog. Furthermore, Fostering Party agrees that he will not engage in any physical discipline in the form of striking the foster dog, either with an object or by hand. If you need guidance for disciplining your foster dog please ask. ___________
Each of our foster families take their responsibility to their foster dog very seriously and will always consider the needs of the dog above those of the potential adopter. We work tirelessly to set the dog up for SUCCESS in their new home, and this is why we rely on the knowledge and insight the foster family has for their foster dog. We believe a dog's foster family knows that dog's temperament and personality best. You will be the greatest asset (and ours) in helping to determine if the foster dog will be a good match for a prospective family. So please watch and learn from your dog so you can be its best advocate when it's time for their adoption. The foster party’s assessment of the dog/adopter interaction and interview with the potential adopter will be taken into serious consideration in any determination of approving a specific adoption; however, GSDRESCUECTX’s Board of Directors has final approval of all adoptions. Fostering Party agrees to be available to meet with prospective adopters referred by GSDRECUETCX and show the foster dog at a time mutually convenient to both parties. ____________
Many of our rescued pets were taken in as strays or come from area shelters. Others are surrendered by owners or rescued by volunteers when found running stray or owner abandoned. All dogs are examined and carefully evaluated for temperament prior to bringing them into our rescue group. In most cases, GSDRESCUECTX has, prior to placement of foster dog, attempted to perform a basic evaluation of foster dog for any obvious temperament and/or health problems. However, GSDRESCUECTX makes no representations or warranties concerning the long-term temperament and/or health of foster dog. Furthermore, we can make no guarantee the foster dog's compatibility with children, other dogs, cats, and/or other pets. Therefore, the Fostering Party agrees to be fully responsible for closely monitoring foster dog's behavior around children and/or other animals and in NO event shall Fostering Party leave foster dog unsupervised with children and/or other pets during at least the first seven (7) days of the foster period. ________
Foster Party is responsible for the daily care of the foster animal including: feeding, socializing, exercising, grooming, observing behavior and temperament, and most importantly providing love and security. It is amazing how far regular food, water, and attention will go to improve your foster dog's well-being. Under no circumstances shall foster dog be fed a diet of human food, the "BARF" diet (bones and raw food), a complete canned food diet or any other diet, which deviates from a dry dog food base. Some dogs will need housetraining. Some need to be taught manners (in the house and walking on a leash). It's important that you work on these issues as it will make it much easier for your foster dog to find it‘s forever home. ________
In some cases, animals may need to be taken to the vet for follow-ups, spaying/neutering appointments, vaccinations, heartworm treatment etc. Should the dog need veterinary treatment of any kind, it is recommended that you use one of our vets if at all possible, unless it is an emergency situation or you have prior approval from Board Vice President Anne Stutz. All pre-approved medical expenses are 100% reimbursed to you. _________
When emergency care or overnight hospital costs exceed $500, the Rescue must be notified for approval of the payment. Payment will be made directly by the Rescue, not the Foster. This avoids any need for reimbursement and demonstrates to the emergency care hospital or vet that the foster is not paying for the care and the Rescue must approve all costs related to care of the dog. _________
If the dog must remain in the hospital or emergency care such that expenses exceed $500, all communication about care of the dog will then be made directly to Anne Stutz, President and NOT the foster. Any decisions regarding care of the dog will ultimately be made by Anne in cooperation and consultation with the Foster as needed. __________
For the safety of the foster dog, your own pet (s), and to protect your home, we recommend that if you keep your dog inside during the day ( all foster dogs must be kept inside during the night) you crate to confine the foster dog whenever you cannot directly supervise it. If you need a crate please advise the director so we can arrange a loaner to be given and returned upon adoption of the dog. In addition, for safety of the foster dog, fostering Party agrees that foster dog shall, at all times when foster dog is outdoors, be confined to a fenced yard or kennel run or be on leash. __________
GSDRESCUECTX is not responsible for reimbursing Fostering Party for foster- dog related costs other than veterinary care. Therefore, all costs incurred by Fostering Party for food, toys, leashes, collars, bowls, treats, bedding, grooming, obedience courses, etc. shall be borne by Fostering Party unless such cost is pre-approved for reimbursement by a designated GSDRESCUECTX representative. Occasionally, GSDRESCUECTX gets donations and are shared with our foster families. All additional purchases made on behalf of your foster dog may be tax deductible. _________
When you agree to take a foster dog in, it's "for the duration." These dogs have already had upheaval in their lives, and it won't end with you...they will get adopted and have to make a change yet again. It's important that we don't move the dogs around at will. Also, GSDRESCUECTX generally runs at full capacity and does not have open foster homes waiting to take in foster dogs if a foster home changes their minds. For these reasons, it is important that you can commit for the entire time the dog is in foster care. This can range from mere days to several months depending on the dog's health and training and current adoption applications. ______
In the event there is a problem we ask that you be willing to try some training to overcome it (some, of course, are not correctable by training...in those cases we only ask that you are willing to work with us and give us time to make adjustments if things do not work out (for example, you made it clear you wanted cat friendly and the foster turns out to be anything but cat friendly!). If an emergency arises where the animal is not working out in your home, you must contact one of the GSDRESCUECTX board members immediately where you will be asked to help coordinate to find a new foster home. This may take a day or two so you must be prepared to keep the dog until the time of transfer in a safe yet still loving and comfortable environment. You will also be asked to help in the transport of the dog to the new foster home with no reimbursement for travel. ______
In no event shall GSDRESCUECTX be responsible or liable for any property/personal damage caused by foster dog to the Fostering Party and/or the property/personal damage of any third party(ies). Fostering Party hereby agrees to release and discharge GSDRESCUECTX from any claims for damage to the property/person of Fostering Party and/or for any damage to the property/person of Fostering Party's family and/or household members. By way of further agreement, Fostering Party agrees to indemnify and hold GSDRESCUECTX harmless against any and all claims made by third parties for property/personal damage alleged to have been caused by or attributed to foster dog. Fostering Party acknowledges full awareness of the fact that foster dog may have "accidents" in the house and, further, that foster dog may engage in other stress related behaviors which could cause damage and/or destruction of household items or personal goods. Fostering Party hereby agrees to assume the risk of any and all such property/personal damage caused by foster dog. _________
Currently, we have volunteers or foster homes in many areas of Texas, including Austin, San Antonio, Houston. So if you need advice or help of any kind please tell us. You will receive full support from all of the GSDRESCUECTX volunteers.
On a more positive note, you will probably become very attached to the foster pet. Rescue is not without tearful good-byes. However, you will feel great warmth in knowing that you helped your foster pet move onto a home for life and that is one of the greatest, most unselfish acts that one can do for a dog and their new family. You will not be encouraged to adopt your foster, however, the reality of fostering is that foster families can and do fall in love with their pets. Therefore, foster families are given first right of adoption upon adoption approval from the GSDRESCUETCX board. ________
GSDRESCUECTX reserves the right to supervise Fostering Party's care of foster dog in order to protect the welfare of the foster dog. If it is determined, with sole discretion of GSDRESCUECTX, that any of the terms and/or conditions of this Agreement are violated or breached by Fostering Party, and/or any misrepresentations were made by Fostering Party in his Volunteer Application, we reserve the right to terminate this Agreement and Fostering Party agrees that he must return foster dog upon demand to GSDRESCUECTX immediately and or within 24 hrs and without need for further legal action or court order.________
Fostering Party agrees that foster dog may only be adopted to an individual (s) approved by GSDRESCUECTX. In no event shall Fostering Party allow the dog to be taken, adopted and/or temporarily housed by any other person without the prior approval of a designated GSDRESCUETCX representative._________
Thoroughly evaluate your REAL preparedness, commitment, and ability to foster a German Shepherd Dog before you sign below. The dog’s life may depend on your evaluation of yourself, your willingness to be inconvenienced, your home, and your tolerances. Please, DO NOT volunteer to be a foster for a German Shepherd if you are not certain that you can MAKE it work out.
I agree with above statements and will adhere to GSDRESCUECTX rules and requirements listed above. If you have any questions please contact us at [email protected] Please return the completed, signed agreement to :
