Meet Sunnie
Okay, so when you are a bit shy it is good to start with small talk. But I weigh 55 pounds so can I talk small? Chatting about the weather is a good ice breaker. It allows me to perfectly transition to stating my name. Hey, wasn’t today sunny and my name is too also Sunnie. I was rescued from a dog shelter. Foster Mother aka The Lady That Feeds Me thinks I didn’t get much human interaction before I got there. I will take a little more time to un-turtle myself. Or something about a shell and coming out of it??
Hey speaking of turtles. Did you know that there are entire stores dedicated to selling stuffy toys that mock animals? It’s crazy because whether they are turtle, robot, dragon or cow shaped, they all make sqeaky bird noises. Seriously, I doubt a hippopawtumus says “SQEEEEE” I hope your voice is as soothing as Mister Ross who paints happy trees, because I will need lots of encouraning words to do stuff. We can work on obedience once I warm up. The Lady That Feeds Me says I do tend to be jumpy once I get comfurtable around my human.
I am also quite picky on what I eat. I believe humans call it finicky, but I call it a refined palette. I have yet to find any training treats I want to gobble up. I will however, accept a treat and politely take it to my bed for storage. Currently, I eat a chicken flavored food. Humans have a saying that “everything tastes like chicken”. That isn’t true. I do not enjoy the way beefs or lambs taste. Yuck, definitely not. The Lady That Feeds Me can tell you the recipe, but I do prefer my chicken dry bits to be mixed with frozen raw bits also of chicken or real shredded chicken. Got it mister?
I am learning house training. I am learning playing with toys that make bird sounds. From what I have observed I am supposed to play with the stuffy animal shaped toys ONLY. Although the human foot coverings smell better and aren’t as noisy, they are off limits. I think The Lady That Feeds Me calls them shews. Shews. Shoooshes, Shoes. Since I am timid and just learning house etiquette, I will need a patient human. I am spooked by loud noises, particularly large trucks (garbage trucks are the devil) and thunder. My spook list is actually a little bit longer than most dogs: trucks, big trucks, bigger trucks, trash trucks, thunder, sudden movement, water, and uh trucks.
The Lady That Feeds Me says it is quite normal to be scared when you didn’t get proper exposure to noises as a pup. Everything will frighten me at first but after some time and comfort I will realize that not all things are boogie pants. In fact, I prefer nighttime for activity since the world is a little quieter than and most trucks are back to wherever they came from.
It will be important that you provide me with a safe space to make me feel safe as if I am in a little creature den. A dark quite room, a bath rub, or blankets over my crate will serve as a safe zone. I wish for a nice sweet family to help me relax and teach me all about being a regular dog. Plus chicken, thank you for reading my speech. It’s my first speech.
